Posted by Ellen Brown | Feb 02, 2024

There are a number of warning signs that you may be headed for personal bankruptcy. These include:

  • Missing payments on your bills. This is one of the most obvious warning signs that you may be in financial trouble. If you are consistently missing payments on your bills, it is a sign that you are not able to keep up with your debt obligations.
  • Not having enough money to cover your basic expenses. If you are not able to cover your basic expenses, such as rent, food, and utilities, it is a sign that you may be in financial difficulty.
  • Having high debt levels. If you have high levels of debt, it is a sign that you may be at risk of bankruptcy. The higher your debt levels, the more difficult it will be to get out of debt.
  • Losing your job. If you lose your job, it can be a major financial setback. If you do not have enough savings to cover your expenses, you may be forced to file for bankruptcy.
  • Having a medical emergency. If you have a major medical emergency, it can be very expensive. If you do not have health insurance or if your health insurance does not cover the full cost of your medical bills, you may be forced to file for bankruptcy.
  • Divorce or separation. Divorce or separation can be a major financial setback. If you have to pay alimony or child support, it can make it difficult to make ends meet.
  • Repossessions.  You wake up in the morning and your vehicle is gone it is  time to take some drastic measures to improve your financial situation.
  • Making impulsive financial decisions. If you are making impulsive financial decisions, such as taking out high-interest loans or maxing out your credit cards, it is a sign that you may be in financial trouble.
  • Ignoring your financial problems. If you are ignoring your financial problems, it is a sign that you are in denial about your situation. If you do not take steps to address your financial problems, they may only get worse.
  • Lawsuits and judgments.  In Washington State your creditors can garnish 20% of your wages in addition to garnishing the money in your bank account.  Most people cannot survive with this drastic cut in income.

If you are experiencing any of these warning signs, it is important to seek help from a bankruptcy attorney. They can help you assess your financial situation and develop a plan to get back on track.
